ACADEMIC SENATE
-
As defined by the Academic Senate Regulations (see page 5), Academic Senate is "the principal academic body in the University". It has certain powers delegated to it by Council - such as the approving of examination results and the completion of requirements for the award of degrees. At the same time, it makes recommendations to Council concerning all changes to degree rules, and all proposals for new awards. It can thus be said that all matters in the University of an academic nature find their way into the agenda of Academic Senate - either for consideration and resolution, or for recommendation to Council.
-
To assist it in its work, Academic Senate has established a number of academic committees. These committees, consisting of members of the academic and general staff as well as student representatives, are entrusted with considering the detailed academic business of Senate and bringing forward recommendations.
-
The Academic Restructure resulting in the creation of four (4) Faculties from 1 January 2009 required changes to Academic Senate Rules to allow membership from the Faculties. That in turn would affect the Macquarie University By-Law (2005). Due to insufficient time to amend the By-Law, which requires approval of the Governor, the University Council in December 2008 approved the Academic Senate Transitional Rules for 2009.
-
The administration of the business of Senate is conducted by the Office of the Academic Registrar.
