ACADEMIC SENATE
-
As defined by the Academic Senate Regulations (see page 5), Academic Senate is "the principal academic body in the University". It has certain powers delegated to it by Council - such as the approving of examination results and the completion of requirements for the award of degrees. At the same time, it makes recommendations to Council concerning all changes to degree rules, and all proposals for new awards. It can thus be said that all matters in the University of an academic nature find their way into the agenda of Academic Senate - either for consideration and resolution, or for recommendation to Council.
-
To assist it in its work, Academic Senate has established a number of academic committees. These committees, consisting of members of the academic and general staff as well as student representatives, are entrusted with considering the detailed academic business of Senate and bringing forward recommendations.
-
Membership of Academic Senate is divided into three groups:
1. those who are members of Academic Senate ex officio - this group includes the Deans of Divisions;
2. the elected representatives of Divisions - elected for a three year term of office;
3. three student representatives - elected for a one year term of office.
-
The administration of the business of Senate is conducted by the Office of the Academic Registrar.
